Cargo Ship Shin Onoe Departs Unalaska After Repairs
The cargo vessel 'Shin Onoe' has made an early departure from Unalaska on February 6, 2013, following the successful completion of its sea trials and a thorough Coast Guard inspection. The ship, which had been docked at Summer Bay for two days, resolved issues with its turbocharger that had previously caused a loss of propulsion along the challenging Great Circle shipping route. After leaving Summer Bay around 3 p.m., the 'Shin Onoe' was originally en route to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, to load cargo. However, the current destination of the vessel remains uncertain, leaving shipping enthusiasts and industry observers curious about its next move. Shin Onoe: Enormous Cargo Ship Heads to Unalaska Under Duress
The Shin Onoe, a formidable cargo vessel measuring 150 feet in width with a draft of 60 feet when fully loaded, is set to make its way to Unalaska next week, marking a significant moment as it will be one of the largest ships to dock at the port. Currently, the ship is sailing without cargo, having experienced a turbocharger failure early this week while navigating the Great Circle shipping route towards Prince William Sound, just west of Attu Island. Ed Page, with the nonprofit Marine Exchange of Alaska, is diligently tracking its progress. "Due to the mechanical issue, she has reduced power, and is unable to achieve her usual speed," says Page. "At present, she’s moving at approximately five knots through the Aleutians and Bering Sea." As of Friday afternoon, the Shin Onoe was reported to be approximately 600 miles northwest of Unalaska. This data has been shared with the Coast Guard for monitoring purposes.
