On the evening of April 8, 2011, at approximately 7:40 p.m., the pusher train associated with the vessel SUNNY CONAKRY (IMO 9406489) encountered an unexpected gust of wind while navigating away from Cape Unity. The incident occurred as the vessel was transitioning from the sheltered area and subsequently allided with the Neuhof ferry pier located in Hamburg. The pusher was en route from Rethe to the Tollerort Terminal in the Köhlbrand when the strong winds forced it against the ferry pontoon. At the time of the accident, the Cape Unity was proceeding toward Sandau harbour. The collision resulted in the destruction of the access bridge, which collapsed into the water, along with damage to the supporting pilings. Additionally, one barge suffered damage to its starboard foreship above the waterline; fortunately, there were no injuries reported and no hazardous materials were released into the environment.
