Working Conditions Aboard the Sunda

On January 10, 2020, the bulk carrier 'Sunda' demonstrated exceptional bravery and seamanship by rescuing a French family—consisting of a mother, father, their 16-year-old son, and a French bulldog named Pascha—alongside a Portuguese skipper from a disabled sailboat stranded in the tumultuous waters of the Atlantic Ocean during a fierce storm. The crew, led by Captain Versic, alongside two other Croatian sailors and a Filipino crew member, sprung into action following a distress call reporting that the sailboat had suffered an engine failure. Initial communications over VHF radio confirmed that while the crew was fatigued, they remained in good health. Given the unsafe weather conditions and impending nightfall, the rescue was strategically postponed until the next day. The 'Sunda' maintained a vigilant presence near the stranded vessel throughout the night as a precautionary measure. The following morning presented further challenges, as the crew faced five interruptions during their rescue mission due to severe weather, characterized by four-meter waves. Despite these hurdles, they successfully maneuvered close enough to the sailboat to utilize a 'Line Throwing App,' allowing them to establish a safe connection. At approximately 3:05 p.m., the bulk carrier reached the yacht, facilitating a smooth transfer of the family and the skipper within a brief ten-minute window. After ensuring everyone was safe and healthy, the 'Sunda' set course for Brazil, arriving at the port of Macapa. The vessel then proceeded upstream along the Amazon River, ultimately docking in Santarem on January 17, 2020.
