Burgas Port Incident: Detention of 'Sun S' Highlights Maritime Compliance Issues

Jun 03, 2026 10:47

On May 8, 2020, the cargo vessel 'Sun S' faced a temporary detention in the port of Burgas, Bulgaria. The inspection revealed six significant deficiencies concerning its operational safety and regulatory compliance. Among these were issues with the Certificate and Documentation, particularly relating to the Cargo Ship Safety Equipment, for which the responsibility did not fall on the Recognized Organization (RO). Additional deficiencies were noted in the areas of pollution prevention, specifically under MARPOL Annex V for garbage handling, as well as shortcomings in the ISM code compliance. The ship also exhibited problems with its emergency systems, including the emergency power supply and generator, and lacked adequate personal fire safety equipment. After addressing these concerns, the 'Sun S' was cleared for release on May 11, 2020, allowing it to resume its operations in maritime trade.

Sun S Engine Failure Leads to Tug Assistance in Aliaga

Jan 14, 2020 10:04

On January 8, 2020, the cargo vessel Sun S encountered a critical engine failure while docked at Aliaga. Despite the crew's best efforts, repairs were not feasible on site. To facilitate the vessel's safe transport, the tugboat Yumurtalik was dispatched on the afternoon of January 10, initiating a tow toward Tuzla. During the transit through the Canakkale Strait, a Coastal Safety tug was assigned to ensure the security of both the Sun S and the surrounding maritime traffic. The convoy successfully arrived at Tuzla anchorage on January 12 and proceeded to a shipyard pier, where repair operations commenced following an extensive damage assessment carried out by the class surveyor, along with additional technical inspections. After thorough repairs and surveys, the Sun S resumed its journey on February 13, making its way to Istanbul, where it was docked from February 21 to 22. The vessel continued onward, heading to Braila, with an estimated time of arrival set for February 24.
