In a significant legal development, the 'Miletus' has been ordered to be detained at Bhavnagar port in Gujarat after its involvement in a hit-and-run incident off the Kerala coast on June 6, 2014. The Kerala High Court issued the arrest order on June 10, 2014, following an accident in which the merchant ship collided with the fishing boat 'Kairali-2' while it was operating approximately 10 nautical miles off the Manakodam coast, situated between Kochi and Cherthala. The collision resulted in severe damage to the fishing vessel, prompting a nearby boat to rescue the nine fishermen on board. Quick actions by local fishermen led to a timely alert to the Coast Guard, which located the Miletus around 8:30 p.m. near Kozhikode. Upon boarding the ship, the Indian captain acknowledged the collision, confirming it was logged in the ship's records. As the vessel was en route to an Indian port, it was permitted to continue its journey. However, the officials at the Bhavnagar port, along with the Coast Guard, were notified of the situation. Consequently, the Kerala High Court's ruling necessitated the arrest of the 'Miletus' and mandated coordination among the Bhavnagar port authorities, Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping), Mercantile Marine Department (MMD), and the Coast Guard units in Kochi and at headquarters.
