Four fishermen died in collision with cargo ship

Mar 18, 2026 09:59

**Title: Tragic Collision Claims Lives of Four Fishermen Near Aomori** On March 17, 2026, a maritime tragedy unfolded off the coast of Misawa in Aomori Prefecture when the cargo vessel 'Suehiro Maru,' on its journey from Tomakomai to Hachinohe, collided with the fishing boat 'Kofuku Maru No. 65' (IMO: 947430) at approximately 1:15 a.m. local time. At the time of the incident, the 'Kofuku Maru No. 65,' which had a crew of 13, found itself about 20 kilometers from the fishing port of Misawa. The captain of the 'Suehiro Maru' promptly notified the 2nd Regional Headquarters of the Coast Guard located in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture, just five minutes after the catastrophe. Unfortunately, the fishing vessel capsized and sank rapidly in the dark waters, prompting an urgent search and rescue operation. Although nine crew members of the 'Kofuku Maru No. 65' were rescued without serious injuries, the situation turned dire for four fishermen who were initially reported missing. At around 7 a.m., one crew member was retrieved from the water, entangled in fishing nets, while three others were found nearby, all exhibiting signs of unconsciousness. Tragically, all four were later confirmed dead at a local hospital. In contrast, the six-man crew aboard the 'Suehiro Maru' reported no injuries following the collision. The vessel, which later docked in Hachinohe, displayed a significant vertical scratch on its bow as evidence of the impact. Fortunately, weather conditions at the time were clear, with wind speeds clocked at around 26 km/h and wave heights reaching about one meter. In response to this heartbreaking incident, the Hachinohe Coast Guard Office has launched a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision. The 'Suehiro Maru,' owned by a shipping company in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, was transporting a cargo of rocks, having departed from Tomakomai Port in Hokkaido on the evening of January 16, en route to Kimitsu, located in Chiba Prefecture. As this unfolding story develops, the maritime community is reminded of the inherent dangers at sea and the importance of maritime safety protocols.
