Dramatic Container Fire Aboard 'Stratford' Near Yongshu Reef
On July 28, 2025, the cargo ship 'Stratford' faced a harrowing incident approximately 190 nautical miles northwest of the Yongshu Reef, situated near Hong Kong in the Nansha district. The vessel, carrying 25 crew members, was en route from Shenzhen to Nha Trang as part of its China–India Express 3 (CIX3) service when a fire erupted in four of its containers located on the foreship. Upon receiving the distress call, the Salvage Bureau promptly alerted the South China Sea Rescue Bureau, which quickly dispatched the 'Nanhai Jiu 116,' a patrol vessel conveniently nearby. Additionally, a rescue helicopter was deployed for aerial surveillance and real-time updates on the fire situation. Upon arrival, the patrol boat initiated high-intensity cooling and firefighting operations using its fire monitors. Three specialized rescue team members boarded the 'Stratford' to assist with the firefighting efforts. By late that evening, substantial progress had been made, and most of the flames were extinguished. However, from the night of July 30 to early August 31, some containers once again began to emit smoke, leading to an expansion of the affected area. The rescue teams tirelessly executed a series of firefighting measures, including water spraying, fire-retardant injections, and comprehensive fire detection inspections. By 2 p.m. on July 30, the visible flames were reported extinguished, and subsequent inspections confirmed there were no residual fire hazards by the evening of August 1. Thanks to the diligence of the rescue teams, the crew, vessel, and cargo were secured, effectively averting potential maritime pollution. By the afternoon of July 30, temperatures within the containers had stabilized, and the fire was officially declared out, but monitoring for any signs of re-ignition continued. The 'Nanhai Jiu 116' then escorted the 'Stratford' as it made its way to its final port of destination, arriving safely on August 6, 2025. SM Line Expands Fleet with Acquisition of 2006-Built Post-Panamax Vessel for $24 Million
South Korean shipping company SM Line is making waves in the maritime industry with its swift fleet expansion efforts. Launched just last December by the Samra Midas Group, SM Line has quickly established itself in the transpacific and intra-Asia markets. According to their official website, the carrier's fleet currently boasts 23 vessels, with ambitions to grow this number to 30 by the year's end. In its latest move, the company has acquired the 8,533 TEU container ship Lloyd Don Carlos, built in 2006. Reports indicate that SM Line has paid a significant sum of $24 million to Germany-based E R Schiffahrt for this post-panamax vessel. This acquisition comes at a time when rates for similar container ships are steadily increasing, with 8,500 TEU vessels currently earning around $14,500 per day on charter. It is anticipated that the Lloyd Don Carlos will be deployed in SM Line’s transpacific operations, further strengthening the company’s position in the competitive shipping realm.
