Stranded 'Storm I' Rescued in Ferrol Estuary After Engine Failure
On September 22, 2025, at approximately 7 p.m., the cargo ship 'Storm I' encountered engine issues while navigating out of the Ferrol estuary, leaving it adrift near Cape Prioriño Chico (Lat. 43.4320 Lng. -8.3617) on its journey from Pasajes to Setubal. Thankfully, the prompt response from the tugboats 'María de Maeztu', 'Ibaizabal Cinco', and 'Punta Redonda Uno' ensured a quick rescue. With the expertise of Ferrol Pilots, 'Storm I' was successfully secured and escorted to the outer port of Caneliñas, where vital repairs were conducted. Extreme Wind Gusts Cause Shipping Chaos in Novorossiysk
On the evening of July 25, 2018, from 9:15 p.m. to 9:45 p.m., Novorossiysk faced a sudden and severe weather event that led to serious disruptions in the maritime operations of the port. A swift shift in wind direction from the north to the southeast, combined with gusts reaching speeds of 24-25 meters per second, resulted in four vessels breaking free from their moorings or dragging anchor. Among the affected vessels was the cargo m/v 'Serenada,' which was unable to maintain its position, leading to an allision with berth no. 39 due to its stern moorings failing. In a similar incident, the sheerleg 'Barbaros 3' also lost its fore and aft moorings, drifting even after dropping both anchors and ultimately colliding with floating dock No. 3 at the Novorossiysk Ship Repair Yard. The bulk carrier 'Lion' struggled to stay secured as it too lost its stern moorings, resulting in an allision with berth no. 5. Most notably, the vessel 'Storm' dragged its anchor and veered outside of designated anchorage limits, grounding itself momentarily before managing to refloat using its own power and return safely to its anchorage. Fortunately, initial reports indicate that all damages sustained by the ships and port infrastructure are non-serious, allowing operations to resume with minimal disruption after the storm subsided.
Three-Month Salary Freeze for Crew of Detained Southern Star
The crew of the detained vessel 'Southern Star', currently anchored in Chatham, has not received their salaries for the past three months. With dwindling supplies on board, a charitable organization dedicated to supporting seafarers has been stepping in to provide essential food provisions. Currently, eight Russian crew members remain aboard the ship, while five other Russian nationals have already been sent home. The 'Southern Star' was brought to Chatham on April 3, 2016, following engine troubles and was later detained by the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) due to its unseaworthy condition. The UK Admiralty Court has since imposed an arrest on the vessel over allegations of outstanding bunker fees. The registered owner is Evry Global Inc, managed commercially by Coralot Consulting Ltd., which is based in Larnaca.
