On June 23, 2024, the Indian Ocean witnessed a disturbing missile attack directed at the 'Stolt Sequoia', which was en route from Manamah to Le Havre. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed that they received reports of two separate incidents occurring in different locations during the early hours of the same day. The first incident took place approximately 65 nautical miles west of Al Hudaydah, where the captain of the 'Stolt Sequoia' reported an attack involving an uncrewed aerial system (UAS), resulting in damage to the vessel. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the ship continued its journey toward its next destination. Later that day, UKMTO disclosed another critical event involving a distressed vessel located 96 nautical miles southeast of Nishtun. This vessel experienced flooding that escalated uncontrollably, prompting the captain to issue an order for the crew to abandon ship. Remarkably, the crew was successfully rescued by a passing vessel that responded to the emergency. Meanwhile, the abandoned vessel remains adrift at position 14 31 N 053 08 E. In accordance with maritime safety protocols, the UKMTO has classified this incident as a SOLAS emergency.
