Vlaardingen Oil Spill: Heavy Fuel Mishap Affects Multiple Vessels
On May 11, 2016, a significant oil spill incident unfolded in Vlaardingen, triggered by a miscalculation during the transfer of heavy fuel from the bunker tanker "Texas" to the "Genuine Venus" at a jetty along the New Maas river in the historic port area. Approximately 600 liters of oil leaked during the transfer process due to the crew’s error in estimating the fuel quantity, resulting in an overflow well beyond the accepted limits. This unfortunate mishap coated several vessels and jetties in a sticky residue, extending its reach to the Zevenmansport area, effectively grounding the affected ships until thorough cleaning could be conducted. In response to the situation, the Seaport police deployed their vessel, the "P5", to manage the spill and ensure safety protocols were followed. The owner of the "Texas" faced financial repercussions as a safety fine of 4,000 Euros was imposed for the incident. Following extensive cleaning efforts, the "Texas" departed from the port of Rotterdam in the early hours of May 13, en route to Point Lisas, with an estimated time of arrival set for May 25.
