Greenpeace Activists Disrupt Bulk Carrier Arrival in Hamburg, Injuries Reported

Jun 02, 2017 21:03

On June 1, 2017, Greenpeace activists staged a significant protest against the coal trade by blocking the bulk carrier "SBI Subaru" from docking at Hamburg's Hansaport. The vessel, which had departed from Texas carrying a substantial cargo of 60,000 tons of hard coal, was scheduled to berth around 6 p.m. However, it ended up waiting for nearly four hours due to the actions of the activists. Demonstrators launched nine inflatable boats towards the ship and boldly scrawled the message 'No Coal - No Trump' across its hull. Approximately 22 individuals entered the waters of Hansaport, determined to obstruct the ship's arrival. This event unfolded on the eve of President Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Protection Agreement, further highlighting the activism's timeliness. In response to the standoff, the water police dispatched numerous vessels, including several smaller craft from around Germany, who were in town for a training session related to the upcoming G20 summit. During the confrontations between police and protesters on the water, a police officer from Schleswig-Holstein sustained minor injuries. On land, authorities detained a number of Greenpeace participants, but they were released shortly after and escorted away from the area. Additionally, eight of the inflatable protest boats were confiscated. Legal investigations are underway against the involved individuals for material damage, coercion, trespassing, and violations of assembly laws. After the delay, the "SBI Subaru" finally managed to dock at Hansaport around 10 p.m., coming to rest at the pilings in Finkenwerder for approximately three hours prior to completing its journey.
