On the evening of December 5, 2020, a dramatic incident unfolded at the port of Béjaia when the Liberian-flagged container ship 'Vega Sigma' (IMO: 9330240) lost control during the unmooring process from berth 22 due to an unexpected electrical failure. In a striking turn of events, the 'Vega Sigma' collided with the docked container vessel 'Atlantic North', which was currently involved in cargo operations at berth 24. The impact triggered a catastrophic mishap as a 64-ton mobile crane, engaged in container handling on the 'Atlantic North', fell over, injuring the crane operator who was subsequently transported to Khellil Amarane hospital for treatment. The collision caused the 'Atlantic North' to drift along the quay, ultimately striking the stern of the ‘OWL’, another vessel that was in the process of unloading a sugar cargo. As a result of this series of collisions, both ships sustained significant hull damages. The 'Atlantic North', in particular, suffered a breach and will be docked for repairs before it can resume its journey.
