E.R. Bayonne Receives Tug Assistance in Istanbul Strait
On September 23, 2020, at 08:20 a.m., the bulk carrier 'E.R. Bayonne' encountered challenges while navigating through the Istanbul Strait, specifically near Kanlica, Beykoz. Faced with strong currents, the vessel slowed down and requested the support of tugboats. The 'Kurtarma 5' and 'Kurtarma 11' were dispatched to assist the ship in safely completing its transit. Following successful aid from the tugs, the 'E.R. Bayonne' moored at Istanbul's outer anchorage, positioned at 41° 17.35' N 029° 1.41' E. Ship traffic in the Bosporus reopened at 12:55 p.m. However, the vessel was unable to resume its journey due to concerns over a potential main engine issue. A class surveyor promptly attended to the bulk carrier and confirmed that all systems—including main engines, propulsion, steering, and navigation—were functioning properly. The 'E.R. Bayonne' was on a route from Narvik to Eregli and remained stationary at the northern entrance of the Istanbul Strait as of September 25, awaiting green light from authorities to continue its voyage.
