Daring Rescue: 'Lydia Cafiero' Saves Stranded Japanese Yachtsman
In a remarkable maritime rescue operation, the cargo vessel 'Lydia Cafiero' came to the aid of a distressed Japanese yacht captain, Jyunichi Hamaguchi, off the coast of Chile on the morning of January 27, 2016. The incident took place approximately 400 nautical miles south of Punta Arenas, where Hamaguchi's vessel had suffered water ingress and was left adrift. The emergency unfolded when the MRCC of the Chilean Navy in Punta Arenas received a distress signal on January 26. Coordinating an immediate search and rescue operation, the Navy dispatched the patrol boat 'Marinero Fuentealba,' along with two aircraft and a Dauphin helicopter. By 10 a.m. on January 27, rescue teams were en route to the yacht, which they located at 1:30 p.m., despite challenging conditions of poor visibility and three-meter waves. Noticing the compromised yacht in the vicinity, the 'Lydia Cafiero' swiftly altered its course to assist. Later that evening, another aircraft launched from Valparaiso arrived in the area around midnight, discovering Hamaguchi still aboard and deploying an emergency raft for his safety. At 01:30 a.m. on January 27, the crew of the 'Lydia Cafiero' successfully rescued Hamaguchi, later rendezvousing with 'Marinero Fuentealba' at 06:30 a.m. He was airlifted by helicopter, which facilitated his transfer to the Chilean ship via specialized rescue swimmers. Remarkably, Hamaguchi was reported to be in good health post-rescue, and he was expected to reach Punta Arenas by 4:30 p.m., where the Maritime Authority awaited his arrival. This incident is a testament to the collaborative efforts of maritime agencies in ensuring the safety of sailors at sea.
