Last Tycoon Comes to the Rescue of Solo Aussie Pacific Rower

Jun 22, 2012 09:48

On June 9, 2012, a dramatic rescue unfolded as British adventurer Charlie Martell was saved by the crew of the Gibraltar-flagged cargo ship, Last Tycoon. Martell, who was attempting an audacious solo row across the Pacific Ocean from Japan to America, found himself in peril after his vessel, Blossom, sustained severe damage caused by towering 50-foot waves during a tropical typhoon. The situation turned critical when Martell, a Territorial Army Royal Engineer Commando, issued a mayday call on June 7. Prompt response came from the Japanese coastguard, which quickly notified the Last Tycoon, prompting the ship's crew to alter their course and navigate towards Martell's last known location. The rescue effort took two exhausting days as the crew of Last Tycoon braved rocky waters to reach the stranded rower. Upon locating Martell, the crew expressed their admiration for his bravery in taking on such a formidable challenge. Captain Aleksandr Kornilov reflected on the experience in a report to the ship's owner, stating, "All the crew is surprised with the courage of Mr. Martell, who decided to cross the Pacific Ocean alone on board a row boat. But of course, all of us happy that we could save a human life at sea." In his detailed account, Captain Kornilov described the vessel's struggles against the turbulent seas as it made its way to the 41-year-old adventurer's aid. This remarkable story not only highlights the perils of ocean adventures but also the heroic efforts of those who answer the call for help at sea.

Rescue at Sea: Last Tycoon Saves Rower Charlie Martell from Distress

Jun 09, 2012 23:26

Charlie Martell, a 41-year-old rower from Cirencester, has been safely rescued from the depths of the Pacific Ocean after enduring a grueling 36-hour struggle. Martell found himself in peril while attempting to row across the vast ocean when his boat, the 'Blossom,' was struck by the fierce tropical storm Mawar on June 7. While at sea and approximately 700 miles off the coast of Japan, Martell was forced to send out a mayday signal after his vessel was pitch-poled in treacherous 50-foot waves. The force of the storm caused a significant breach in a bulkhead, rendering it too dangerous for Martell to continue his journey. At the time of the incident, he had already spent 34 days at sea, with an ambitious goal of completing his 130-day trek to San Francisco. Fortunately, the rescue came courtesy of the 'Last Tycoon,' a vessel making its way to Vancouver. Thanks to alerts from the Japan coastguard, the 'Last Tycoon' made a timely diversion to aid in the rescue. Plans are in place to recover the 'Blossom' before the ship resumes its voyage to its final destination.
