Star Bulk Carriers Welcomes First Ultramax Bulk Carrier, M/V Star Challenger
Star Bulk Carriers Corp., a prominent player in the global shipping industry specializing in dry bulk cargo transportation, has successfully taken delivery of its inaugural Ultramax bulk carrier, the M/V Star Challenger. Previously known as M/V 'Supra Challenger', this vessel boasts a substantial deadweight tonnage of 61,462 and was constructed in November 2012 by the esteemed Imabari Shipbuilding Group in Japan. In line with the company's adaptive, spot-focused commercial approach, the Star Challenger has been secured on a short-term time charter for a duration of 40 days at a competitive gross hire rate of $13,700 per day. This strategic move aims to leverage anticipated improvements in freight rates within the dry bulk sector. The acquisition of the Star Challenger marks a significant milestone as it is the first of two modern Ultramax bulk carriers scheduled for delivery under the definitive agreement announced on November 18, 2013. Notably, the second vessel, M/V Star Fighter, is projected to join Star Bulk's fleet by the end of December 2013, further enhancing the Company’s operational capabilities in the bulk shipping market.
