Emergency Tow for Bulk Carrier Sea Hermes in the English Channel

Feb 23, 2020 17:13

On February 22, 2020, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the bulk carrier 'Sea Hermes' encountered a serious propulsion failure while navigating through the English Channel, north of Cape Gris-Nez, Pas-de-Calais, at coordinates 51°08'20" N, 001°38'40" E. The vessel, carrying a substantial load of 49,640 tonnes of soya bean meal and manned by a crew of 22, experienced an unexpected drop in speed, prompting the CROSS Gris Nez to initiate communication. The crew reported engine damage that rendered the ship inoperable, leaving it drifting 6.3 nautical miles from the busy traffic separation scheme of Cape Gris-Nez. At that time, the area was experiencing challenging weather conditions, with west-southwest winds reaching 29 knots and rough seas. By 10:09 p.m., the crew confirmed that their repair efforts had been unsuccessful, leading to a request for anchorage permission and tug assistance. In response, CROSS Gris Nez deployed the emergency tug 'Abeille Languedoc', chartered by the French Navy, to assist with the situation. A special intervention team aboard a Dauphin helicopter from the French Navy was dispatched at 12:02 a.m., including a pilot from Dunkirk and the second captain of the tug to facilitate repairs and towing logistics. By 1:00 a.m., the 'Sea Hermes' had inadvertently drifted into English waters, and following guidance from the English Coast Guard, it was directed to anchor in Dungeness Bay with the tug's aid. The pilot of Dunkirk successfully disembarked from the vessel at 5:13 a.m. via helicopter, with the second captain of 'Abeille Languedoc' remaining on board to assist. The actual towing operation commenced at 7:41 a.m., ensuring the bulk carrier was safely guided toward its anchorage, expected to reach Dungeness Bay by 11:00 p.m. After resolving the mechanical issues, the 'Sea Hermes' set sail from the bay on February 25 and finally docked at Szwedzkie in Gdynia on March 3 at 4:10 p.m. For further details, refer to the French report with photo: https://www.premar-manche.gouv.fr/communiques-presse/remorquage-d-un-vraquier-en-difficulte-dans-le-dst-du-pas-de-calais.
