MIAMI—In a daring rescue mission, the Coast Guard airlifted a 58-year-old Filipino man from the bulk carrier Spring Sky, located more than 200 miles northeast of Port Canaveral, on Friday. The situation unfolded when the Coast Guard’s 7th District Command Center received an urgent message from the 641-foot Singaporean-flagged vessel, indicating that the ship's master was experiencing severe abdominal pain. Promptly, the watchstanders initiated a rescue operation, dispatching a crew from Coast Guard Air Station Miami aboard an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft, as well as a team from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater with an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter. The helicopter arrived at the scene around 9:40 a.m., successfully hoisting the stricken man aboard before transporting him to Holmes Regional Medical Center for urgent medical attention.
