Successful Refloating of Cargo Ship 'Spil Ningsih' Near Ste Anne Island

Oct 21, 2024 20:33

On October 19, 2024, the Seychelles Port Authority (SPA) faced a maritime challenge when the cargo vessel 'Spil Ningsih' ran aground near Ste Anne Island. Promptly alerted to the situation, the harbor master, the chief executive, and the deputy chief executive of SPA convened an emergency response team comprising around 30 members from the operations division. Immediate action was taken as all available marine assets, including pilots, tugs, and mooring personnel, were mobilized to assist in the efforts to refloat the stranded vessel. The Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority (SMSA), Seychelles Coast Guard (SCG), and the National Information Sharing and Coordination Centre (NISCC) were also notified as the severity of the situation necessitated a coordinated response. Given the size of the 'Spil Ningsih' and its precarious position, quick action was crucial to avoid potential environmental hazards, including the risk of pollution should the vessel shift position. Fortunately, an initial assessment revealed that the ship was stable with no visible signs of leakage or pollution in the surrounding waters. This finding significantly lowered the immediate environmental risks involved in the recovery operations. After multiple attempts, the vessel successfully floated free at 1:10 a.m. on October 20, 2024, aided by the rising tide. Once refloated, 'Spil Ningsih' was escorted to a secure anchorage for thorough inspection. The SPA personnel remained vigilant, monitoring the vessel's draft for an hour to confirm there were no issues with water ingress. The cargo ship was officially cleared to dock at Mahe Quay, where it arrived safely at 5:47 p.m. on the same day.
