Russian convoy masking position by AIS spoofing

May 05, 2026 11:16

**Title: Russian Naval Convoy Uses AIS Spoofing to Conceal Movement** In a strategic maneuver, a Russian naval logistics convoy operating in the Mediterranean, south of Italy, undertook a deceptive practice by spoofing its AIS data to obscure its true location. After a two-day hiatus from transmitting, the tanker 'General Skobelev' (IMO: 9503304) resurfaced, broadcasting its position northwest of Estonia. However, satellite imagery from May 3 revealed the convoy's real position between Italy and Malta, highlighting an intentional attempt to mislead tracking efforts. The newly reported Baltic location was quickly discredited by satellite imagery captured around the same time, which indicated no vessel was present there. In reality, the convoy was clearly visible south of Malta. In addition to the 'General Skobelev', the group included the frigate 'Admiral Flota Kasatonov', the tug 'Sparta', and the replenishment oiler 'Akademik Pashin' (MMSI: 273399750). The makeup of the convoy suggested an orchestrated logistics operation rather than a mere passage across the waters. The combination of fuel and replenishment vessels, along with a modern escort ship, hints at an extended operational mission rather than a short transit. In this context, AIS spoofing is utilized to create confusion, hinder identification, and diminish transparency in maritime monitoring. The convoy's configuration and its navigational trajectory imply that it may be part of a coordinated logistics effort, potentially aimed toward Syria. Historically, such convoys have been crucial in supporting Russian military operations in the region. The presence of the modern escort, the 'Admiral Flota Kasatonov', further underscores the significance of this movement, indicating it may involve sensitive or strategically vital objectives.

Russian shadow fleet convoy transited Dover Strait

Apr 24, 2026 17:27

**Title: Russian Shadow Fleet Convoy Navigates Dover Strait Amid Geopolitical Tensions** In a notable maritime operation, a Russian shadow fleet convoy comprised of the Project 22350 frigate 'Admiral Kasatonov' and the replenishment oiler 'Akademik Pashin,' alongside the merchant vessels 'General Skopelev' and 'Sparta,' has successfully completed a southbound transit through the Dover Strait. This strategic maneuver sees the convoy heading towards the Mediterranean, marking a significant moment in the ongoing geopolitical tensions surrounding the conflict in Ukraine. The 'Admiral Kasatonov' provided essential escort duties for the merchant vessels, a move interpreted as a calculated response to the western sanctions designed to impede Russia's oil revenue and protect crucial assets. By deploying frontline warships to facilitate the safe passage of these resources, Russia underscores its commitment to maintaining operational capabilities amid international scrutiny. During this transit, the convoy attracted attention not just for its size but also for the implications it holds. The UK's Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship 'Tideforce' shadowed the convoy, employing both Automatic Identification System (AIS) tracking and visual surveillance by maritime spotters to monitor their route through one of the world's most trafficked shipping lanes. This vigilant oversight reflects the heightened maritime security in the region, as nations remain alert to potential shifts in maritime operations linked to the ongoing conflict.

Russian convoy was split

Feb 18, 2025 20:42

The large Russian convoy was split in the Kattegat on Feb 17. While the "Aleksandr Otrakovskiy", the "Sparta" and the "General Skobelev" sailed through the Fehmarn Belt into the Baltic Sea, the "Ivan Gren" and the "Sparta II" were still waiting off Skagen. For days, the Russian units have been observed and accompanied by NATO units on their voyage. In the Fehmarn Belt, the Federal Police were on site with the patrol ship "Neustadt" together with the Danish Navy. The passage through the narrow waters of the Fehmarn Belt was closely monitored. There were no incidents as the Russian units strictly adhered to the traffic regulations. The corvette "Erfurt" took over the escort off Gedser. The Air Force also sent a Tornado jet from Jagel to the Kattegat on Jan 17 for reconnaissance.

Feb 17, 2025 11:55

The Royal Netherlands Navy escorted the Russian convoy, consisting of the landing ships 'Alexandr Otrakovsky' of the Ropucha class and 'Ivan Gren of the Ivan Gren class, the supply ship 'Yelnya' of the Altay class, the ' General Skobelev' and the transport ships 'Sparta' and 'Sparta II', through the Dutch Exclusive Economic Zone during the weekend of Feb 15/16. After the passage, other NATO partners took over the escort. The Dutch navy had deployed the Zr.Ms. 'Johan de Witt' for the escort. The on-board helicopter NH90 was also used. The escort was not only to be vigilant, but also to be able to intervene in suspicious actions or disruptions. In this way, the defence protects the critical infrastructure under water.
