Working Conditions Aboard the Sofia

On March 9, 2017, at approximately 8 a.m., the bulk carrier MV Sofia encountered an armed skiff attack while navigating the Gulf of Guinea, specifically located at coordinates 03 20N 004 29E, roughly 120 nautical miles southwest of Brass, Bayelsa. The vessel was on its journey from Lagos to Owendo, Libreville when seven assailants armed with firearms approached and opened fire. In response, the crew swiftly executed evasive maneuvers, increasing the ship's speed and retreating non-essential personnel to the citadel for safety. After a tense 40 minutes, the attackers ultimately abandoned their efforts and departed the scene. While the vessel did sustain some damage from the gunfire, it was able to continue its route and safely anchored at Owendo later that evening.

In the early hours of June 23, 2015, the bulk carrier 'Sofia' encountered a significant navigational issue as it ran aground while departing from the bustling port of Paranagua, located in Paranagua Bay just north of Pontal do Sul. The vessel, which was on its way to Santos, experienced a mechanical failure, leading to the grounding incident. Fortunately, after a two-hour effort, the 'Sofia' was successfully refloated and subsequently anchored at the outer roads of Paranagua.
