Successful Refloating of Cargo Ship 'Umiavut' after Grounding Incident

Aug 17, 2018 12:11

In a successful operation carried out on August 16, 2023, the cargo ship 'Umiavut' was refloated after being grounded on Lake St. Pierre since the early hours of August 12 at 10:30 a.m. The refloating efforts involved three tugs and were monitored by a Canadian Coastguard helicopter, ensuring a safe recovery process. Following the ship's extraction, the 'Umiavut' was docked at the port of Trois-Rivières around 4 p.m. Prior to the operation, approximately 100 tons of cargo was removed from the vessel, along with the pumping of ballast water to aid in its stability. The ship is scheduled for another inspection at Trois-Rivières before continuing its journey to Valleyfield, after delivering supplies to Northern Quebec, with its most recent stop being Salluit. At the time of grounding, the cargo ship was carrying only empty containers. Initial investigations suggested that a rudder failure may have precipitated the grounding incident.
