Tragic Incident at Takoradi Port: Stowaway Loses Life After Jumping Overboard

Oct 18, 2014 16:25

In a heartbreaking turn of events at the Takoradi Port in Ghana's Western Region, a tragic incident unfolded last Wednesday when a 20-year-old stowaway, identified only as Kwansa, lost his life after jumping into the sea. This startling occurrence involved a total of nine stowaways, residents of New Takoradi, who had clandestinely boarded the Singaporean vessel, MV Kota Bunga, which was docked at the port to load bauxite destined for China. Sources indicate that these individuals concealed themselves in various sections of the ship, including the anchor hole, hoping to escape unnoticed. Their plan took a dire turn when the vessel's crew, during the routine departure formalities, detected unusual activities on board and initiated a comprehensive search of the ship. According to Chief Supt. Samuel Owusu Berko, Director of Marine Police, the authorities were alerted at approximately 8:30 PM on Wednesday that nine individuals had entered the port area and boarded the foreign vessel without permission. During the crew's search for the stowaways, the group, facing imminent discovery, decided to leap overboard in a desperate bid for freedom. Tragically, Kwansa, who was reportedly unable to swim, succumbed to the treacherous waters, taking in seawater and ultimately losing his life. Chief Supt. Owusu Berko expressed concern over the choices made by the stowaways, questioning their belief that they could successfully flee to foreign lands. This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with stowaway attempts and the dangers that they pose.
