Car Carrier Siem Cicero Blocked from Halifax Port Over COVID-19 Symptoms

Apr 01, 2020 12:33

On March 31, 2020, the Public Health Agency of Canada announced that the car carrier 'Siem Cicero' has been barred from entering Halifax's port due to reports of COVID-19-like symptoms among its crew members. The agency was alerted on March 17 that crew members aboard the vessel exhibited symptoms associated with the coronavirus. The ship, which was en route from Emden and transporting vehicles, was denied port entry in accordance with the Quarantine Act, aimed at mitigating virus spread and maintaining the integrity of the supply chain at the port. The 'Siem Cicero' will remain ineligible to dock until 14 days following the last reported instance of symptoms in the crew.

Newly Launched Car Carrier 'Siem Cicero' Grounded Due to Software Glitch

Jul 14, 2017 10:00

In an unusual incident attributed to a software error, the newly commissioned car carrier 'Siem Cicero' faced steering failure shortly after departing from Pula on July 1, 2017. The vessel ran aground in the Ems, off course in the Dollart-Bight, around 12:30 PM on July 13. With the vessel becoming uncontrollable, 'Siem Cicero' suffered a bottom contact accident outside the navigational channel situated between the radar station and Emder Knock. The ship's experienced master, aged 53, promptly summoned two tugboats to assist in regaining control. Just 10 days into its service, 'Siem Cicero' was successfully towed back to the port of Emden, where it had docked on July 11, and had a brief layover before noon. Following a thorough inspection by divers, no damage was detected during the bottom survey. After rectifying the software issue, port authorities lifted the sailing ban at 6 PM, allowing 'Siem Cicero' to set sail for Halifax at 1:45 AM on July 14.
