Cuban Castaways Rescued by Navy Near Progreso
On December 12, 2023, the 13th Naval Zone of Yucalpetén conducted a successful operation to aid six Cuban castaways who were rescued by the vessel ‘Sider Tayrona’ while traveling from Puerto Moin to Tampico. The migrants were found stranded on a disabled boat approximately 150 nautical miles northwest of Progreso, Yucatán. The Naval Search, Rescue and Maritime Surveillance Station (ENSAR) at Yucalpetén, along with Naval Health personnel, promptly intervened to assist in evacuating and transporting the migrants, which included one woman and five men. The castaways were safely brought in from around 35 nautical miles offshore and taken to Progreso in good health. Following their rescue, the migrants were subsequently handed over to the National Migration Institute (INM) officials, who are set to initiate the repatriation procedures for their return to Cuba.
