Collision Incident Involving German Freighter Chopin and Reefer Atlantic Mermaid in St. Petersburg
On September 13, 2012, a maritime incident occurred in St. Petersburg's Big Port when the German freighter, Chopin, collided with the berthed German reefer, Atlantic Mermaid, and subsequently made contact with Berth 20. The incident took place during the docking maneuver of the Chopin. According to reports from the pilot who was on board the freighter, the ship's Master did not follow the recommended protocols, opting instead to forego the assistance of a tugboat, which led to a miscalculation concerning the influence of the area's strong currents. As a result, the extent of damages to both vessels and the berth remains undetermined at this time. For further updates, visit the Maritime Bulletin at http://www.odin.tc.
Lifeboat Conducts Successful Medevac from Atlantic Mermaid near Thurso
On August 16, 2012, a critical medevac operation took place involving the Thurso Lifeboat and the cargo ship 'Atlantic Mermaid', currently identified as IMO 9349272. The request for medical assistance was initiated by Port Services due to concerns regarding a crew member's health during a transatlantic voyage. Although the situation was serious, it was not deemed an emergency requiring immediate airlift; at that time, the vessel was navigating the Atlantic Ocean. After meticulous preparations, the Taylors RNLI lifeboat was dispatched approximately 36 hours later, on August 18, just after midnight. The crew operated under calm sea conditions, ensuring a smooth operation. A doctor was part of the lifeboat crew to provide necessary medical support during the transfer. As the lifeboat reached the designated rendezvous point on the outskirts of Thurso Bay, the 'Atlantic Mermaid' successfully lowered the sick crew member onto the lifeboat using a specialized basket stretcher. Quick action from the lifeboat crew allowed for a safe transport to shore, where an ambulance was waiting to take the individual to the hospital for further treatment. While further details regarding the crew member's condition have not been disclosed, the successful execution of this medevac highlights the dedication and readiness of the RNLI in responding to maritime emergencies.
