On August 16, 2012, a critical medevac operation took place involving the Thurso Lifeboat and the cargo ship 'Atlantic Mermaid', currently identified as IMO 9349272. The request for medical assistance was initiated by Port Services due to concerns regarding a crew member's health during a transatlantic voyage. Although the situation was serious, it was not deemed an emergency requiring immediate airlift; at that time, the vessel was navigating the Atlantic Ocean. After meticulous preparations, the Taylors RNLI lifeboat was dispatched approximately 36 hours later, on August 18, just after midnight. The crew operated under calm sea conditions, ensuring a smooth operation. A doctor was part of the lifeboat crew to provide necessary medical support during the transfer. As the lifeboat reached the designated rendezvous point on the outskirts of Thurso Bay, the 'Atlantic Mermaid' successfully lowered the sick crew member onto the lifeboat using a specialized basket stretcher. Quick action from the lifeboat crew allowed for a safe transport to shore, where an ambulance was waiting to take the individual to the hospital for further treatment.
