Coast Guard and Container Ship Team Up to Rescue Stranded Boaters in the Caribbean
On Friday, the crew of the Coast Guard cutter "Donald Horsley" joined forces with the container ship "Skiathos" to execute a dramatic rescue of three stranded individuals in the Caribbean Sea, roughly 75 nautical miles south of Puerto Rico. The rescued trio, a man and two women of Dominican nationality, had been adrift for an astonishing 21 days after their 20-foot vessel, aptly named "Papa Fish," encountered a disabling issue during their journey from Dominica to Martinique that began on May 19, 2018. The rescue operation initiated when watchstanders at Coast Guard San Juan received an urgent notification at 7:19 p.m. on June 7 from the "Skiathos,' which reported the sighting of a boat with three people frantically signaling for help. A nearby U.S. Customs and Border Protection Caribbean Air & Marine patrol aircraft confirmed the sighting of the "Papa Fish" and its distressed passengers. In response, the Coast Guard mobilized assets from Air Station Miami, dispatching an HC-144 Ocean Sentry maritime patrol aircraft and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Borinquen. The cutter "Donald Horsley" was also diverted to the scene to provide immediate assistance. Upon arrival, the crew of the helicopter directed the cutter for a precise approach to the stranded boat. Once alongside the "Papa Fish," the team aboard the "Donald Horsley" successfully rescued the three individuals, who showed signs of dehydration and hunger but were otherwise in good health. The survivors were then transported to Ponce, Puerto Rico, where Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations agents were on hand to provide care and support. This coordinated effort underscores the vital role of maritime agencies in ensuring safety at sea.
