On the morning of June 27, 2011, at approximately 6:10 a.m., the captain of the "Sevkettin Sonay" reported a missing crew member to the Gris-Nez rescue center. Concern grew when it was discovered that one of the 18 crew members had failed to report for his scheduled shift. The last sighting of the 38-year-old Turkish national occurred two hours prior, leading authorities to believe he may have fallen overboard. In response, the ship's crew conducted a comprehensive search of the vessel while a broadcast alert was issued to all nearby ships to be on the lookout for the man. The search operations were bolstered by a Dauphin helicopter from the Navy based in Le Touquet, alongside a Belgian Seaking Helicopter stationed at Koksijde, near Ostend. Lifeboats from the French SNSM, including the "Jean Bart 2" from Dunkirk and the "Notre-Dame de Risban" from Calais, also joined the efforts, along with the RNLI boat from Ramsgate and the police launch "Escaut" from Dunkirk. By 10:45 a.m., the captain confirmed that a thorough search of the entire ship had yielded no signs of the missing crew member. As the hours progressed, a Falcon 50 aircraft equipped with thermal imaging capabilities from the Navy in Lann Bihoué arrived to assist in the search at noon. After more than 10 hours of rigorous searching in challenging conditions, with the water temperature recorded at 14°C, the search was officially suspended at 3:30 p.m. without any findings.
