In a perplexing incident, Sambit Majumder, a 29-year-old second engineer from India, vanished from the chemical tanker 'Serengeti' on June 16, 2020, in the South China Sea. Majumder had embarked on his journey from home on February 4, 2020, joining the vessel for what was supposed to be a four-month contract. On the fateful evening of his disappearance, he dined with fellow crew members at approximately 8 p.m. and was last seen in his cabin afterward. However, when morning arrived on June 17, Sambit failed to attend breakfast, raising alarm among his shipmates. The concern deepened as he was also missing from the engine room, where his absence was noted around 10 a.m. A thorough search of the ship revealed his personal belongings, including his phone, but there was no sign of his whereabouts. Tragically, after 72 hours of extensive search efforts coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres in Hong Kong and the Philippines, the search was officially called off. At the time of his disappearance, Majumder’s contract had concluded, yet he remained on board due to travel restrictions preventing a timely return home.
