In a devastating incident on July 24, 2018, three port workers lost their lives, and one was hospitalized after exposure to toxic gas while working in the cargo hold of the 'Sepetiba Bay' at Portocel. The vessel, which was in the process of offloading wood treated with a hazardous gas for preservation, became the scene of tragedy when one worker ventured into the hold and lost consciousness. In an attempt to rescue him, three other workers entered the cargo hold but were also poisoned. Although one worker managed to return to the cargo deck, he was severely affected by the fumes. Unfortunately, the other three workers did not survive the incident.
