Historic European Vessel Docks at Pars Petrochemical Port in Iran
TEHRAN, April 13 (MNA) – In a landmark event for Iran’s maritime trade, the first European vessel dedicated to transporting petrochemical products has officially docked at Pars Petrochemical Port in Assalouyeh. This significant milestone follows the arrival of oil tankers chartered by prominent European companies including Total from France, Lukoil from Russia, and Cepsa from France, which had previously anchored at Kharg Terminal. The vessel, owned by an Italian firm, successfully berthed at the Pars Special Economic-Energy Zone, where it commenced loading liquid chemical products manufactured at the local petrochemical complexes. This arrival signifies the inaugural docking of a European shipping entity at the Pars terminal, paving the way for additional European vessels expected to follow suit. Pars Petrochemical Port is equipped with 15 berths and boasts a depth of 15 meters, allowing it to accommodate ships with a deadweight capacity of up to 80,000 tons, primarily those transporting gas and petrochemical goods. With a nominal annual capacity of 35 million tons, it is projected that around 26 million tons of liquid petrochemical products will be exported through this crucial port.
Fuel Leak Incident on Paraná River After Ship Collision
A significant marine incident unfolded on December 13, 2014, when the bulk carrier 'Octbreeze Island' collided with the tanker 'Ghetty Bottiglieri' at kilometer 285 of the Paraná River, near San Pedro, at approximately 5:40 PM. The collision resulted in a substantial breach, measuring between 5 to 6 meters in length, on the port side of the 'Octbreeze Island', severely damaging the ship's fuel tank area and causing a fuel spill. Following the accident, both vessels remained anchored near the site, with the bulk carrier showing a noticeable starboard list. In response to the fuel leak, 400 meters of oil containment booms were deployed by the tasked response company, Cintra. Additionally, tugs 'Cazador' and 'Corsario' were dispatched to assist in the situation. The collision caused significant damage to the bow of the 'Ghetty Bottiglieri', which was visibly shattered. As a precautionary measure, the Coast Guard took charge of regulating maritime traffic in the area due to the large oil slick that partially extended about 500 meters downstream from the collision site. At the time of the incident, the 'Octbreeze Island' was traversing downstream towards Nueva Palmira, while the 'Ghetty Bottiglieri' was heading upstream to San Lorenzo, Santa Fe. This accident occurred amidst a stormy weather condition, adding complexity to the response efforts.
