Collision on Kiel Canal

Mar 03, 2026 12:55

**Title: Early Morning Collision on the Kiel Canal: Incident Report** In the early hours of February 28, 2026, a serious maritime incident occurred on the Kiel Canal, specifically near Brunsbüttel and the Dückerswisch passing point. At approximately 3:25 a.m., a multi-purpose vessel collided with the 'Sea Explorer,' which was making its way from Oskarshamn to Misrata. As the vessel approached the designated passing area, it unexpectedly lost control and ended up blocking the canal. At the time, the 'Sea Explorer' was heading westward towards the Brunsbüttel lock. Despite the captain's immediate attempt to execute a full reverse maneuver, the collision was unavoidable. Reports confirmed that the bow of the westbound vessel struck the port stern of the eastbound 'Sea Explorer.' Fortunately, both crews emerged from the incident without any reported injuries. Additionally, emergency response teams conducted thorough inspections and found no evidence of water ingress or leaking fuel, preventing further environmental implications. In response to the situation, the local water police launched an investigation to determine the underlying causes of the collision. Concurrently, the German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the Transport Sector (BG Verkehr) mandated that both vessels halt navigation until inquiries were completed. However, both ships were cleared later that same day and continued their respective journeys without further incident. This collision underscores the importance of navigational safety and the challenges vessels face in busy maritime corridors like the Kiel Canal.

The tug "Parat" was called to assist the ship. The ship returned to the Elbe roads. After the engine was restarted, the next attempt to enter the canal on Feb 27 around 1.40 a.m. was more successful. The ship was expected in Finland on Mar 2 at 3 a.m.
