Freighter Collision Incident in Panama Canal
On March 11, 2019, a maritime incident unfolded in the Panama Canal when the freighter "Iolaos" made contact with the "SE Nicky." The collision occurred at the Pedro Miguel Lock, with the "Iolaos" impacting the port side of the "SE Nicky," which was struck on the starboard side. Both vessels were navigating northward through the canal towards the Atlantic with minimal damage reported following the encounter. After completing their transit, both ships docked at Colon Anchorage for a thorough damage assessment and to facilitate ongoing investigations. The "Iolaos," which originated from Chile, set sail again on March 13 at 12:10 a.m., heading for Boston, with an estimated arrival date of March 21. Meanwhile, the "SE Nicky" was on a journey from Mexico to Mobile and remained anchored near coordinates 09° 22.11' N 079° 55.82' W off Colon as of March 13.
