Heroic Rescue: Container Ship Aids Injured Solo Sailor Off French Coast

Jan 24, 2020 21:09

On the night of January 23, 2020, a dramatic rescue unfolded 90 miles northwest of Brest, where a 70-year-old English solo sailor faced life-threatening conditions aboard his dismasted 8.5-meter yacht. Stranded without radio communication, the sailor was in dire straits when he used distress light signals to alert passing vessels. Fortunately, crew members on the container ship 'Maersk Nienburg', which was en route from Bremerhaven, spotted the man's signals west of the Ouessant Traffic Separation System. At approximately 9 p.m., the CROSS Corsen responded to the emergency, having just coordinated the rescue of two other sailors whose boat had sunk near Pointe du Raz earlier that day. The rescue operation was swiftly organized, and by 10:20 p.m., the 'Maersk Nienburg' successfully retrieved the injured sailor amidst challenging winds. Following the rescue, the container ship was instructed to steer closer to the French coastline. Meanwhile, the SNSM station Conquet was notified, deploying the lifeboat 'SNS 151 - La Louve' to meet the freighter around ten miles offshore. The sailor was safely transferred aboard 'La Louve' at 6 a.m. on January 24, after which he was transported to Le Conquet for medical assistance and subsequently taken to the Cavale Blanche hospital in Brest. The 'Maersk Nienburg' continued its journey southwest, while the abandoned yacht remained adrift, prompting the issuance of an urgent notice to mariners (AVURNAV) to enhance vigilance in the vicinity. The last known coordinates of the damaged vessel were 48.52 N, 06.46 W, with its navigational lights activated. This remarkable case exemplifies the maritime community's dedication to safety and support when it matters most.

Security Alert: Robbery Attempt on Maersk Nienburg Prevented

Sep 04, 2018 18:38

On August 20, 2018, at 3:50 PM, the container ship 'Maersk Nienburg' encountered a potential security threat when two individuals approached the vessel in a small skiff at coordinates 02Β°22'18"S, 80Β°00'54"W. Thanks to the vigilance of the onboard security team, the alert was raised immediately after the perpetrators were spotted. Security guards activated all deck lighting, which effectively deterred the intruders from boarding the ship. As a result of the crew's swift response, the assailants abandoned their attempt and retreated in their skiff. The incident has been duly reported to Guayaquil Port Control, ensuring continued maritime safety in the region.

Emergency Medical Evacuation in the English Channel

Mar 02, 2017 12:21

On March 1, 2017, the Weymouth All Weather Lifeboat (ALB) was dispatched in the morning to assist the container vessel 'Maersk Nienburg' in the English Channel. The incident took place approximately 20 nautical miles south of Portland Bill, where a crew member suffered a hand injury. As the 'Maersk Nienburg' altered its course to head towards Weymouth, the lifeboat was rapidly launched to reach their location. Two crew members from the Weymouth ALB boarded the 'Maersk Nienburg' to evaluate the injured individual. Following their assessment, the casualty was carefully transported via stretcher to the Weymouth Lifeboat, which proceeded to bring them back to shore. Upon arrival in Weymouth, paramedics were on standby to transfer the injured crew member to the hospital for further treatment. Meanwhile, the 'Maersk Nienburg' continued its journey from Antwerp to Cartagena.
