Disabled Ship 'Benedito' Towed to Cadiz Following Engine Failure

Mar 08, 2016 09:37

On March 5, 2016, the cargo vessel 'Benedito' encountered an engine failure while navigating west of Gibraltar, specifically at coordinates 36°44'N 09°08'W. The ship was on its way from Castellon to Bayonne when the incident occurred. To resolve the situation, the Portuguese tugboat 'Montenevo' (IMO: 9276119) was summoned for assistance. On March 7, the tug successfully took the 'Benedito' under tow at the location 36°06'N 08°19'W. The vessel is now en route to Cadiz, with an estimated arrival time of March 8 at approximately 2 p.m.

Stranded Workers on Newport Cargo Ship Set to Fly Home After Months of Hardship

Jun 24, 2015 09:42

A group of Indonesian workers, alongside two from the Philippines and Romania, who have been trapped aboard the Italian cargo vessel Sunflower E at Newport Port since March due to unpaid debts, are finally set to return home. These thirteen men have endured four months without pay, amounting to a staggering $250,000 owed to them. Since the ship was seized on March 10 following the shipowner's bankruptcy, they have been living onboard with limited resources, facing dwindling supplies of toiletries such as toothpaste, deodorant, and shaving foam, although authorities have provided necessary food and water. In a positive development, the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) announced today that measures are in place to ensure the workers receive their long-overdue wages. The Italian liquidators managing the situation will permit the workers to seek a court judgment, creating a pathway for potential payment once the vessel is sold. Ken Fleming, the UK and Ireland coordinator for the ITF, stated, 'The talking is over - we will be pursuing this as aggressively as we can, pushing for the quick sale of the vessel. The workers will be going home, penniless.' It’s worth noting that the Italian captain, along with three crew members who managed to pay for their own travel, left the vessel soon after its detention, while the remaining workers stayed aboard, hopeful of reclaiming their owed wages.

Stranded Crew of 'Sunflower E' Faces Dire Conditions in Newport Docks

Jun 23, 2015 11:12

For nearly four months, 13 crew members from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Romania have been caught in a precarious situation aboard the detained cargo ship 'Sunflower E' at Newport Docks. The vessel was seized by authorities due to unresolved financial debts, leaving the seafarers without their wages during this extended period. Facing harsh living conditions, the crew has reported a lack of hot water, a broken refrigerator, and dwindling fuel supplies expected to deplete within a week. Although the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) has stepped in to provide essential food and water supplies, the situation is becoming increasingly concerning. ITF inspectors are actively working to secure the unpaid wages owed to the crew and facilitate their safe return home. The ship's seizure stemmed from the owner's failure to settle a loan with an Italian bank, prompting legal intervention by the ITF, which has engaged specialized attorneys to negotiate with the South Wales court and the bank. Their goal is clear: to ensure that the crew members of 'Sunflower E' receive their rightful salaries and assistance following the vessel's bankruptcy and eventual resale.
