Rescue Operation Saves 35 Migrants Off Ierapetra Coast
On November 23, 2025, a dramatic rescue unfolded 55 nautical miles south of Ierapetra when the Greek Coast Guard's JRCC alerted local authorities about a distressed migrant vessel. Acting swiftly, the container ship 'Salahuddin', which was en route from Tanjung Pelepas to Port Said, came to the aid of the stranded boat, successfully retrieving 35 individuals aboard. On January 13, 2018, at 08:17 AM, the cargo ship Salahuddin encountered a significant main engine electrical malfunction while navigating from Shanghai to Rotterdam. At the time, the vessel, carrying a crew of 26, was drifting eastward at a speed of three knots, located approximately 30 nautical miles southeast of Portland (latitude 50 06 51N, longitude 001 55 51W). The Salahuddin was transporting a general cargo totaling 117,908.5 kilograms, including various classified dangerous goods such as 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.1, 5.2, 8, and 9. Additionally, it had onboard substantial bunkers comprising 955.8 metric tonnes of high sulphur heavy fuel oil, 370.6 metric tonnes of low sulphur heavy fuel, and 316.5 metric tonnes of diesel oil. The crew managed to conduct necessary repairs within a swift 45-minute timeframe, allowing the Salahuddin to continue its journey toward Rotterdam. The vessel ultimately arrived at the ECT Delta Container Terminal in Amazone Port on January 14 at 3:00 AM.
