Tankers Anchored Near Fujairah: Recent Maritime Activities

Jun 17, 2019 11:45

On June 17, 2023, the oil tanker 'Front Altair' (IMO: 9745902) was securely moored off the coast of Fujairah, assisted by the tugs 'E-Two,' 'Aquila,' and 'Boka Alpine.' The vessel was positioned at coordinates 25° 3.95' N 056° 34.95' E. Just a day earlier, on June 16, the 'Kokuka Courageous' was anchored in Fujairah, located at 25° 4.13' N 056° 29.87' E, with the assistance of the tug 'Al Wahsh.' This tanker had recently completed two port loads in Mesaieed, Qatar, and Jubail, Saudi Arabia, and was reportedly en route to Singapore carrying a methanol cargo. The 'Kokuka Courageous' departed Jubail on June 10 at 7 a.m. and navigated through the Strait of Hormuz at 9 p.m. on June 12. Following its departure, the vessel was observed halted at 6:20 a.m. on June 13, approximately 80 nautical miles east of Fujairah. It was confirmed that the ship experienced a hull breach above the waterline on the starboard side, which is believed to be a result of a suspected attack. Reports indicated that the vessel was struck twice within a three-hour timeframe, leading to an emergency evacuation of the all-Filipino crew by the tug 'Coastal Ace.' Boskalis Takes Charge of Salvage Operations for Damaged Tankers in Gulf of Oman

Jun 16, 2019 19:16

Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) has officially been designated as the salvor for two tankers that suffered damage in a suspected attack off the coast of Oman. Following the incidents, the insurers of both vessels swiftly appointed Boskalis' subsidiary, SMIT Salvage, to undertake salvage operations involving the vessels and their cargo. The Kokuka Courageous, which was carrying a methanol cargo, is currently in stable condition after the crew managed to evacuate safely and subsequently stabilize the ship. A successful towing connection was established yesterday afternoon, allowing the crew to return to the vessel. The Kokuka Courageous is now in the process of being towed to a port within the Gulf region. These salvage operations are being conducted in close partnership with local authorities, including the Marine Emergency Mutual Aid Center (MEMAC), ensuring a coordinated response to the situation.

Crew of 'Kokuka Courageous' Reboard Ship After Incident

Jun 14, 2019 10:05

On June 14, the crew of the 'Kokuka Courageous' successfully reboarded their vessel after a harrowing experience. The tanker had endured two significant impacts, one striking the aft section and another amidships. Fortunately, a fire that erupted in the engine room was quickly contained using CO2 systems. Initially, the crew was taken on board the Dutch tug 'Coastal Ace' (IMO: 9645554), which was making its way from Singapore to Al Hamriya. Later, they were transported to Bandar Abbas aboard the 'Naji 10'. During this incident, the Bahamas-flagged tug 'E Two' (IMO: 9831115), on a route from India to Fujairah, changed course to assist the 'Front Altair'. Meanwhile, the 'Coastal Ace' continued to offer support to the 'Kokuka Courageous', alongside the UAE-flagged tug 'Al Washs' (IMO: 8017190). The tanker was ultimately towed to Khor Fakkan. Adding to the complexity, the United States released a controversial video, purportedly supporting allegations against Iran. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the footage allegedly depicts members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard attempting to remove an unexploded magnetic mine from the ship. Captured by an American surveillance aircraft, the veracity of the claims made by the U.S. remains uncertain.
