Vietnamese Crew Member Detained After Daring Swim to Albany Shore
In an unusual incident, a Vietnamese crew member from the 'Sakzaya Champion' made headlines after swimming to shore in Albany, Australia. Ho Anh Dung, 37, made his escape from the vessel upon its arrival on January 7, 2021, and reached the land on January 9. He appeared in Albany Magistrates Court via video link from Albany Regional Prison on the morning of January 11, facing charges for allegedly breaching COVID-19 protocols by leaving the ship. Mr. Ho swam to the shore before 6:00 a.m. and sought assistance from a local, subsequently checking into a nearby backpacker hostel. However, his stay was short-lived as he was apprehended by police in full protective gear later that night outside the hostel. Fortunately, COVID-19 tests conducted on Mr. Ho and others in the hostel returned negative results, alleviating immediate health concerns. During the court hearing with the help of a Vietnamese translator, Albany Magistrate Diane Scadden informed Mr. Ho that a lawyer had not yet been identified to represent him. Consequently, he will remain in custody until his next scheduled court appearance on January 14. This delay raises critical questions regarding his status, especially since the Sakzaya Champion is set to depart Albany for South Africa on January 11 at approximately 4:30 p.m. The circumstances surrounding Mr. Ho's departure from the ship remain unclear, leaving many speculating about his motives.
