Tanker to be unloaded and taken to a shipyard

Apr 23, 2026 12:09

**Title: RLO Merchant Heads to Shipyard After Unloading at Bremerhaven** In the early hours of April 17, the tanker *RLO Merchant* departed from Strom Quay in Bremerhaven at 2:30 a.m. and successfully docked at an oil depot in the inner harbor by 4:45 a.m. Following the docking, the vessel is set for unloading before it makes its way to a shipyard for necessary repairs. Recent assessments have revealed visible damage to the *RLO Merchant*, particularly on the compass deck, a searchlight, and the satellite dish. Additionally, the hull has sustained injuries above the water line on the starboard side. Initial inquiries conducted by the water police have pointed to a navigational error by the 50-year-old captain during the vessel’s docking alongside the container ship *Vilnia Maersk*. It's reported that the captain did not heed the guidance of the consulting pilot during this maneuver. The investigation into the incident remains active, and while the exact cause of the accident has yet to be definitively established, authorities have confirmed that the captain was neither impaired by alcohol nor drugs at the time. As of April 23, the *RLO Merchant* remains stationary at the dock. **Title: Bunker Tanker Collision at Bremerhaven: Investigation Underway** On April 15, 2026, a significant maritime incident occurred in Bremerhaven when the bunker tanker 'RLO Merchant' collided with two moored container vessels at Strom Quay. The affected ships were the "W. Kampala" (IMO: 9215311) and the "Vilnia Maersk" (IMO: 9778533), resulting in considerable material damage during the unfortunate event. The collision transpired around 4:20 PM as the 'RLO Merchant' was attempting to berth alongside the 'Vilnia Maersk' for refueling. According to preliminary reports, strong currents likely contributed to the failed maneuver, leading the tanker to strike both container ships. Thankfully, no injuries or environmental pollution were reported as a result of the allision. Following the incident, local water police have taken note of the occurrence and imposed a sailing restriction on the 'RLO Merchant'. Authorities have also initiated administrative proceedings against the 50-year-old captain of the tanker, with a thorough investigation currently underway. As a result of the incident, the 'W. Kampala' continued its voyage from Bremerhaven to Antwerp and departed on the same day, with an estimated time of arrival (ETA) in Antwerp set for April 17. The 'Vilnia Maersk' also set sail towards Klaipeda, expecting to reach its destination by April 18.
