Korean Bulk Carrier Rapier Encounters Ice Crisis in Tatarskiy Strait
On January 27, 2023, the Korean bulk carrier Rapier became ensnared in treacherous ice conditions while traversing the Tatarskiy Strait in the Sea of Japan. The vessel has drifted perilously close to the shore, raising concerns about its safety and the potential for further ice entrapments. Reports indicate that at least three additional ships are also trapped in the ice surrounding the strait. The Rapier was making its way from Korea to Vanino when it encountered these hazardous conditions. Unfortunately, there are no icebreakers available in Vanino or Sovetskaya Gavan to assist the trapped vessels, leaving only ice-classed tugboats busy managing traffic in the ports. This situation is reminiscent of last year’s events when vessels remained immobilized in ice for extended periods, highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by severe winter weather in this region.
