Ferry delayed due to police indicent
**Title: Disruption on Key Ferry Route Due to Police Incident** On April 19, 2026, a significant police incident aboard the 'Queen of Surrey' disrupted ferry service on a vital route connecting Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. The ferry, which operates between Departure Bay in Nanaimo and Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver, was held outside the dock while law enforcement addressed a situation concerning an individual in distress. At approximately 11:56 a.m., West Vancouver police were dispatched to the terminal following reports of the concerning individual. As the incident unfolded, additional resources were called in, including the Vancouver Police Department’s Emergency Response Team, the Marine Unit, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 1, and BC Emergency Health Services. Due to the circumstances, the terminal was temporarily closed, leading to the suspension of several ferry sailings while officers worked diligently to manage the situation. The individual involved was transported to the hospital for a medical assessment following their detention. The 1:20 p.m. departure from Departure Bay was notably impacted, causing subsequent cancellations and delays throughout the afternoon, including the 4:00 p.m. sailing from Horseshoe Bay. In response to the disruption, BC Ferries advised travelers to consider alternative sailings on the Duke Point to Tsawwassen route until service could be restored. By around 6 p.m., the West Vancouver Police Department announced that the situation had been resolved, and efforts were underway to reopen the area to the public. As the sun set on the incident, BC Ferries remained committed to updating passengers as operations resumed.
Ferry broke down 40 minutes after resuming service
**Title: 'Queen of Surrey' Ferry Faces Quick Breakdown After Service Resumption** On April 5, 2026, the 'Queen of Surrey' ferry, which had been undergoing essential retrofitting and maintenance, officially resumed its operations. Unfortunately, just 40 minutes into service, crew members detected a mechanical fault with the vessel's steering panel, necessitating its immediate withdrawal from the route. The prompt breakdown resulted in the cancellation of four morning sailings between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale, disrupting travel plans for numerous passengers. Additionally, the 12:10 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. sailings were also scrapped as the ferry was deemed unfit for service. To mitigate the inconvenience caused by the breakdown, a replacement ferry was promptly deployed, starting operations with the 2:25 p.m. sailing from Horseshoe Bay. However, this adjustment led to the cancellation of one return trip to Vancouver Island and two return sailings between Tsawwassen and Duke Point on April 6. Customer service representatives proactively reached out to affected passengers, offering options to reschedule on alternate sailings or process refunds for any necessary cancellations. During the service disruptions, complimentary water taxis, comprising four 12-person vessels and one 38-person boat, were made available for foot passengers until normal operations resumed. As part of the ongoing repair efforts, the 'Queen of Surrey' needed further enhancements, including the replacement of the propulsion and steering control systems, following issues identified with several components. While operations had temporarily faced setbacks since the initial service resumption on April 5, regular ferry service between Duke Point and Tsawwassen has since been restored, ensuring passengers can travel once again.
