Container ship rescued single hand sailor

Feb 26, 2026 10:15

**Title: Container Ship Saves Solo Sailor from Disabled Vessel** In a remarkable act of maritime rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard, alongside the container ship 'Polar Mexico', successfully intervened to assist a distressed solo sailor aboard the 34-foot sailing vessel named 'Spiritus' on February 22, 2026. The incident occurred approximately 35 nautical miles off the coast of Cape Canaveral. The alert began when watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville received an urgent call on VHF-FM channel 16 from the cruise ship 'Carnival Elation' (IMO: 9118721). The report indicated that the 'Spiritus' was immobilized with one individual on board and in need of immediate assistance. Acting swiftly, the command center authorized the launch of a rescue vessel from Coast Guard Station Port Canaveral. However, initial search efforts at the last known location of the 'Spiritus' were unsuccessful. To escalate the response, the Coast Guard deployed an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Clearwater and an HC-144 aircraft from Air Station Miami to aid in the search. Thanks to the aerial surveillance, the crew of the HC-144 successfully located the disabled yacht and established communication with the sailor, who reported troubling conditions onboard; the vessel was taking on water and listing dangerously. With guidance from the aircraft, the nearby container ship 'Polar Mexico' proceeded to the scene. The ship’s crew efficiently brought the stranded sailor on board, ensuring his safety with no injuries reported. The "Polar Mexico" bound for Mexico headed to Bermuda in the night of Jan 11, 2019, after a crew member suffered a suspected broken ankle. The ship was travelling from Bremerhaven to Altamira when the 46-year-old was injured. A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre duty officer said a call was received at about 7.30 a.m. on Jan 11 when the vessel was 800 miles east of the island. It was thought the Polish crewman had suffered a compound fracture to his left ankle. The ship was to be met by the pilot boat "St David" off the east end of the island at 10 p.m. so the injured man can be brought on shore. He will be taken by ambulance to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
