A 29-year-old Chinese dockworker is currently receiving medical treatment at Tauranga Hospital following a serious accident at the Port of Tauranga. The incident occurred while the worker was engaged in unloading logs from the vessel Poavosa Wisdom VI, which is a 169-meter long Panamanian flagged ship docked at berth nine. Reports indicate that the worker was struck by a swinging metal cable known as a strop, which caused him to lose his balance and fall approximately four metres into one of the ship’s steel holds. Emergency services, including a spokesperson from St John Ambulance in Tauranga, reported that the man was discovered trapped in the hold when paramedics arrived on the scene around 12:20 AM. The severity of the fall onto the steel deck necessitates immediate medical attention, highlighting the potential hazards associated with cargo unloading operations.
