Superyacht 'Plus Ultra' Rescues Crew from Sinking Freighter in Arabian Sea

Jun 23, 2021 10:19

On June 20, 2021, the cargo vessel m/v 'Pioneer Star' (IMO: 9120047) suffered a catastrophic mishap in the Arabian Sea, breaking apart in treacherous weather conditions while navigating from Djibouti to Suez. The incident occurred at coordinates 18°21'48.0" N, 57°20'06.0" E, leading to a dramatic scene as the freighter sank off the coast of Oman. At approximately 5:20 a.m. local time, the superyacht 'Plus Ultra' received a distress call indicating the dire situation aboard the stricken ship. In a bold display of seamanship, it altered its course by 12 nautical miles to rescue the crew of the Pioneer Star. When the yacht arrived on the scene, the wreckage was chaotic, with debris strewn across the water and a large slick of diesel fuel contaminating the area. The crew members of the Pioneer Star had deployed two life rafts and a severely damaged lifeboat, but many were scattered throughout the surroundings—some donned life jackets, others in immersion suits, while others were clinging to debris. The crew of 'Plus Ultra' quickly mobilized, establishing a medical station on the owner's deck to address the immediate needs of the survivors. Along with assistance from the vessel 'Rudolf', the rescue operation spanned approximately two and a half hours amidst the challenging conditions, with heaving lines cast out to civilians in peril. Survivors were carefully retrieved from the tumultuous waters and pulled aboard the yacht’s swim platform, with operations complicated by waves crashing against the stern. Once on board, they received urgent care for shock and inhalation of seawater and diesel, followed by provisions of clothing and warm meals. In total, 10 crew members from the Pioneer Star were successfully rescued by 'Plus Ultra', while the remaining nine were retrieved by the support vessel 'Rudolf'. This remarkable rescue highlights the bravery and quick response of the yacht crew in the face of danger.
