Philippine Coast Guard Cutters Suffer Damage from Chinese Patrol Boats During Resupply Mission
In a significant escalation in the ongoing maritime tensions, the Philippine Coast Guard cutters BRP 'Bagacay' and BRP 'Cape Engaño' sustained damage on the night of August 19, 2024. The incident occurred during resupply missions in the contested waters near Second Thomas Shoal, a hotbed of conflict in the Spratly Islands. Both ships encountered Chinese vessels, resulting in a collision that left them with critical damages, marking the most severe incident since hostilities began in the region. As both Philippine vessels were navigating towards the Sabina Shoal area—a zone adjacent to Second Thomas Shoal—an aggressive maneuver was initiated by the Chinese ship CCGV-3104 against BRP 'Cape Engaño'. This led to the first collision, with the BRP 'Bagacay' experiencing its own collision with the Chinese patrol boat CCGV-21551 roughly 20 minutes later, two miles from the initial engagement. The BRP 'Cape Engaño' faced the most extensive damage, with a notable gash measuring approximately 3.6 feet along with impairment to its engine exhaust system. Meanwhile, the BRP 'Bagacay' incurred a hole that measured about 2.5 feet long and 3 feet wide, in addition to a dent on the opposite side of the vessel measuring one foot. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among crew members during these maritime confrontations.
