Bulk Carrier Incident Disrupts Weser Shipping Traffic

Nov 01, 2017 18:16

On November 1, 2017, at precisely 2:45 PM, the bulk carrier 'Nautical Runa' found itself adrift along the Weser when it broke free from its moorings at the J. Müller silos in Brake. With a draught of 12.20 meters, the vessel drifted sideways and ultimately ran aground in the fairway of the river. Earlier that day, the 'Nautical Runa' had commenced unloading a substantial cargo of 53,000 tons of food products from the Brazilian port of Aratu. Towing assistance came promptly from local tugs: 'Bugsier 17' (IMO: 9036234), 'V.B. Rechtenfleth' (IMO: 8701090), and 'VB Blumenthal' (IMO: 8912223), which worked alongside the ship to stabilize it amid the outgoing tide. A bow anchor was also deployed to help maintain its position. The lowest river water levels occurred at 6 PM, leading to a temporary halt of shipping traffic in Brake, with the exception of smaller vessels. Thanks to the rising tide, by 8 PM, a group of tugs including 'Bugsier 1' (IMO: 9320908), 'Bugsier 4' (IMO: 9376191), 'V.B. Geeste' (IMO: 9454307), and 'Alte Weser' (IMO: 9502233) successfully refloated the 'Nautical Runa' and guided her to the South Pier for safe docking. After the incident, the vessel departed once again on November 7 at 3 PM, setting course for Narvik with an estimated arrival date of November 11.
