On July 6, 2017, at approximately 11:50 a.m., the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Durban duty crew received a distress call concerning the freight vessel 'Freight Margie', located about seven miles off Durban's coast. Reports indicated that the ship's captain had collapsed and lost consciousness while anchored. In response, the NSRI deployed the rescue craft 'Megan II', alongside paramedics from Netcare 911. Upon arrival, NSRI crew members and the paramedics boarded the 'Freight Margie', where they found the Italian captain had already succumbed to a suspected heart attack. The paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene. Following the incident, NSRI personnel and a rescue paramedic stayed onboard as the vessel was escorted back to port. Upon docking, they were met by officials from the South African Police Service, Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), and Forensic Pathology Services. The deceased's body was transferred to the Forensic Pathology Services for further investigation, as is standard protocol in such cases.
