On May 6, 2012, at 1009 LT, the Spanish fishing vessel Loamar Segundo found itself in dire straits, issuing a distress signal as it began sinking in the Capo Verde region, near coordinates 16°50'N 26°28'W. The Spanish Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) collaborated with Capo Verde authorities to orchestrate a swift rescue operation. The tanker Navig8 Loucas, which was in close proximity, responded to the distress call and maneuvered to assist. As the situation unfolded, the 11 crew members of Loamar Segundo were able to evacuate into two life rafts. By 1700 LT, the Navig8 Loucas successfully rescued all 11 fishermen, with thankfully no injuries reported among the crew. The rescued individuals, consisting of 3 Spaniards, 3 Cape Verdeans, 4 Indonesians, and 1 Peruvian, are now expected to be transported to Las Palmas, with an estimated arrival date of May 10. Notably, the crew on the Navig8 Loucas includes professionals from the Philippines, Russia, and Ukraine, demonstrating the diverse nature of the maritime workforce.
