Survey of mercury wreck off Fedje being prepared

Mar 25, 2026 09:55

**Title: Preparation Underway for Mercury Survey of U-864 Wreck off Fedje** Since March 14, the vessel 'Olympic Triton' has been undergoing preparations at Vindenes for an extensive survey of the submerged wreck 'U-864,' located off the coast of Fedje. This significant initiative, organized by the Norwegian Coastal Administration, aims to address environmental risks posed by mercury still contained within the wreckage. This forthcoming survey is a follow-up to the expedition carried out in 2025 and is set to enhance our understanding of the wreck's condition and assess the status of mercury containers housed within the submarine's keel. A primary objective of this mission is to evaluate methods and equipment that facilitate safer access to the keel area, where these mercury containers may be situated. Additionally, the survey will include mapping of the seabed and structural conditions surrounding the wreck, supplying crucial data that will inform future decisions regarding remediation efforts. Reach Subsea AS has been appointed as the lead contractor through a competitive bidding process and will collaborate with several specialized partners, including: - NIVA for environmental monitoring - Scanmatic AS for instrumentation - RenOcean AS for dredging operations Members of the Norwegian Coastal Administration will also be onboard to oversee the project, ensuring compliance with contractual obligations throughout the course of the operation. The U-864 wreck is known to still possess potentially intact mercury containers, presenting an acknowledged environmental risk. While prior investigations have detected elevated mercury levels in the sediments surrounding the site, uncertainties remain regarding the amount, condition, and precise location of these containers within the wreck. The findings from this comprehensive survey will play a crucial role in shaping the authorities' decisions on future actions concerning the wreck. These may include strategies such as removing the hazardous mercury, covering it, or implementing a combination of various approaches.
