Iran seized sanctioned tanker
**Title: Iranian Navy Intercepts Sanctioned 'Ocean Koi' Tanker Amid Tensions** On May 8, 2025, the Iranian Navy executed a targeted operation to seize the vessel formerly known as 'Ocean Koi', now identified as 'Jin Li' since November 30, 2025, due to its attempts to export Iranian oil in violation of international sanctions. At the time of its seizure, the ship was reported as Not Under Command (NUC) at coordinates 24° 26' N, 058° 05' E. The tanker has a notable history of involvement in transporting Iranian hydrocarbons, having made at least 16 trips since 2021. Half of these loadings were conducted directly at Iranian ports, while the other half utilized Ship-to-Ship (STS) transfers, revealing a well-coordinated operation fully acknowledged by Iranian authorities. On February 25, 2025, the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) officially sanctioned the vessel, which subsequently led to its deregistration by Barbados, effectively leaving it in a quasi-stateless status. Reports suggest that the vessel was engaged in activities aimed at disrupting or illegally exporting oil from Iran. On the day of the seizure, intelligence analyses highlighted irregularities with the ship's Automatic Identification System (AIS); it appeared to report a location within the Gulf of Oman when, in fact, it was elsewhere. This apparent manipulation indicates that the 'Jin Li' was employing spoofing techniques to obscure its true movements. Given its deep-rooted ties to the Iranian oil trade, the seizure operation serves multiple strategic purposes for Tehran. It is a demonstration of Iran's assertiveness in controlling maritime pathways in the Gulf of Oman and the critical Strait of Hormuz, especially amid escalating tensions with the United States. By capturing this sanctioned vessel, Iran not only reinforced its jurisdiction over the asset but also maneuvered it into domestic waters under the pretense of legal proceedings, effectively shielding it from international scrutiny.
